Shihan Darren Hunter holds a 6th degree black belt, Rokkudan in Shorinjiryu Kentokukan Karatedo. He is the sole representative of this style for Ontario, and was the former technical director for the International Budo Institute for Ontario. Shihan Hunter also holds a 5th degree black belt, Godan, and Shihan title in Shorinjiryu Bubishido Karatedo, a 1st degree black belt, Shodan in Shorinjiryu Kenkokan Karatedo, 3rd degree black belt, Sandan in Kosen Judo, and a 4th degree black belt, Yondan in Japanese Jujutsu, and 4th Kyu in Aikido.
Shihan Hunter taught Karatdeo, Judo, Jujutsu, Catch Wrestling, Sambo, and No Gi grappling classes, at the SHUYOKAN DOJO. The SHUYOKAN DOJO was operated by Shihan Hunter from three locations (Rosenberg Center for Defensive Studies, Brad Jones Karate Dojo, Wulin Martial Arts Academy) in the Toronto/Newmarket Ontario area, from 2007 to 2016. Shihan Hunter is also a Level 2 instructor in Commando Krav Maga.
Shihan Hunter has trained extensively in the Japanese Arts of Karatedo, Judo, Jujutsu, Aikido, Kendo, and Kenjutsu. He has also trained in the Chinese arts of Tai Chi , Shuai Chiao, and has been exposed the fighting system of the WU JING (People’s republic of China’s special military police). Shihan Hunter began his study of Budo in Montreal in 1989, under Shinan Wayne Donivan 9th Dan, and continues to study under him today. Shihan Hunter has also competed Internationally, representing Canada at the 1996 European/Dutch open Koshiki Karatedo Championships, placing 5th in Shiai (fighting), He also studied Judo under Hanshi Hiroshi Nakamura 9th Dan Kodokan Judo.
Shihan Hunter has taught a wide range of students, and continues to pass on the vast knowledge he has acquired over his years of training and study.
Academically, Shihan Hunter has completed courses in criminology at the University of Calgary. He has been FIRST AID/CPR qualified since 1986. In addition, he has completed many courses in the Security and hotel field. He has also received a special commendation from Marriott Hotels International for his security planning and management during the G8 Summit of 2002 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Presently, Shihan Hunter is the Area Trainer, and USE OF FORCE Instructor for SECURITAS CANADA, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
